The internship can also be physically in person at J-PAL’s offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Nairobi, or Accra, or remotely, based on the nationality of the intern and the team’s needs. J-PAL is a renowned global research centre based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and is known for “working to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence.” The headquarters in Africa is at the University of Cape Town, with a satellite office in Johannesburg.

To be considered eligible for the program
- The applicant must be a citizen of a sub-Saharan African country.
- The applicant should hold a degree in economics, statistics, or a development-related field, or currently be in the final year of their study for a degree in these fields.
- For applicants who are students of MicroMasters in Data, Economics, and Design of Policy, they should ensure that they have completed at least one MicroMasters course, as preference will be given to “applicants with competitive MicroMasters course grades (75% and above) who have completed multiple DEDP courses (particularly Data Analysis for Social Scientists and Designing and Running Randomized Evaluations).” The applicant should include the MicroMasters course that they have completed in their application and submit a copy of their program’s record through the MicroMasters portal.

- The applicant must demonstrate a strong interest in social policy and development research.
- The applicant must demonstrate strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
- The applicant must have strong communication skills and pay strong attention to details.
- An applicant with the ability to speak French in addition to English is advantaged.
