The Secretariat of the WTO has three internship offers reserved for postgraduate students and recent graduates who hold an advanced university degree and are interested in gaining a practical and deeper understanding of the multilateral trading system. The WTO Internship Program is very competitive, and interns are selected based on merit, academic qualifications, eligibility criteria, and expertise.

The categories of the internship offer include:

The WTO Internship Program is for postgraduate students and recent graduates with advanced university degrees who are from WTO member countries or customs territories engaged in accession negotiations. China’s LDCs, Accessions, and General Internship Program has up to ten internship offers reserved for postgraduate students and recent graduates who hold an advanced university degree from developing nations and least developed countries. The WTO Support Program for Doctoral Studies is reserved for postgraduate students from developing and least-developed countries who are currently working on their PhD thesis.

To be considered eligible for the program:

The applicant must be a national of a WTO member state or observer government. The applicant should have completed at least one year of postgraduate studies (for example, a master’s degree) in a relevant discipline such as law, economics, political science, international relations, and more. The applicant must not be less than 21 years old and must not be over 30 years old.

Features of the internship program include:

An agreement between an intern and the Director of the Human Resources Division will be established to clarify the conditions of service and remuneration details. Interns will receive a daily allowance of CHF 60 (including weekends and official holidays falling within the selected period—except for interns recruited under China’s LDCs, Accessions, and General Internship Program, whose daily allowance will be CHF 90).
