  The 2021 innovation fund has once again opened applications for startups in Africa. This is following after the GSMA Innovation Fund 2020 where 9 startups across Asia and Africa received grant awards.

Nigeria’s ScholarX, a Digital learning provider, was one of the selected grantees for the GSMA Innovation Fund for Mobile Internet Adoption and Digital Inclusion. The fund was launched in April 2020 to create opportunities for innovative start-ups and SMEs to address the key barriers of accessibility, affordability, digital skills, and safety and security that prevent many from connecting to mobile internet. And since 2018, the GSMA Innovation Fund for Digital Urban Services has been giving a platform to startups using digital solutions in the sanitation, water, plastic, energy and waste management sectors.

The innovation fund will assist startups to scale their digital solutions for developing underserved populations in Africa, Southeast and South Asia. An equity-free grant ranging from $140,000 to $350,000 will be awarded to any of the chosen startups which will go into innovation within 18 months. To qualify for the GSMA Innovation Fund 2021, startups will have to offer digital urban services in any of the continents of Africa, Southeast, and South Asia. The solutions being worked on also must have any socio-economic, commercial, and environmental impact. The deadline for application to the GSMA Innovation Fund 2021 is Friday, July 2, 2021.
