Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, has had to tweak the Super Eagles squad three times this week due to injuries to players and COVID-19 restrictions in Europe. This has seen Paul Onuachu who was on the standby list and Henry Onyekuru benefit from.

The latest well-deserved beneficiary is Anayo Iwuala of the People’s Elephant, Enyimba. He has been handed a call up to the Eagles squad to face Benin Republic and Lesotho, crucial 2022 AFCON qualifier games. He replaces Sadiq Umar who has been restricted by his club, Almeria, due to COVID-19. Anayo joins goalkeeper and Enyimba teammate, John Noble in the Super Eagles camp. Both players have been outstanding this season, both in the league and on the continent. Noble is easily remembered as the hero of the CAF Confederations Cup knockout game against Rivers United that ended in penalties, taking Enyimba into the group stage. Anayo Iwuala, on the other hand, has been awesome in midfield and on the wing for Enyimba all season.

He has played 19 of Enyimba’s 20 games this season, scoring twice and assisting eight times. The tricky player will look to bring those bright Enyimba form into the Super Eagles and possibly earn himself national recognition. Nigeria tops Group E with just one point ahead of Benin Republic who they will play against at the Stade Charles de Gaulle in Porto-Novo on the 27th of March, then on the 30th of March, Nigeria will complete the qualifiers with a return to Lagos against Lesotho at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
