The nomination process commenced with Senator Abdul’aziz Yari and Senator Godswill Akpabio being put forward as candidates. After receiving the nominations, the Clerk of the Senate officially closed the nominations as there were no further candidates. The intense contest primarily revolved around Senator Yari, the former governor of Zamfara State, and Senator Akpabio, a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and ex-governor of Akwa Ibom State. Ultimately, Senator Akpabio’s popularity and support propelled him to victory, succeeding Ahmad Lawan as the Senate President.

Senator Barau’s credentials were read out, and he graciously accepted the nomination. With no other nominations put forward, the Clerk of the Red Chamber declared Senator Jibrin Barau as the Deputy Senate President without opposition.
