Ex-Nigerian international, Waidi Akanni has voiced his opinion as regards the return of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), urging the League Management Company to toe the path of European leagues like the German Bundesliga and Spanish La Liga which has already recommenced while the English Premier League (EPL) is set to return today, June 17, 2020. Akanni who opined that advanced countries have shown that football could be played during this pandemic without risking the health of players and officials, expressed his delight at the return of the EPL, noting that European countries have set the pattern for other parts of the world to follow.

It is an exciting time for us to at least see the game come back on TV for a start and later on the return of spectators. That is exactly what we saw when the Bundesliga matches started…. We cannot compare our clime with that in Europe and elsewhere. I think the LMC should work out something around it no matter how difficult it’s going to be.”

Akanni went further to urge Nigerians especially relevant stakeholders to support efforts made by the LMC towards seeing to the resumption of the NPFL and advised the LMC to adopt protocols as done in European leagues, especially the use of health passports for officials engaged in league matches.

My advice is that LMC should look at all possibilities that can be worked out to ensure that the league comes back on time. But they will need our support to bring back the NPFL.”
