Contingents from all across Africa have begun arriving for the second AITEO-Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Awards, scheduled to take place today, 1st April 2019, at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Amongst the delegates who have already arrived is Fatma Samoura, Secretary General of FIFA.
At a small gathering of stakeholders and notable names in the NFF, Fatma lauded the football ruling body of Nigeria for its doggedness in the fight to make Nigerian football what it once was. She also appreciated the leadership of the NFF for extending an invitation to the AITEO/CAF Awards to her, and for considering her for a special award at the gala night.
Fatma will be bestowed with the NFF Order of Merit Award.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, the NFF’s first Vice President and Chairman of the Awards Organizing Committee, Seyi Akinwunmi, commended AITEO for its continued support to the success of the yearly event.
AITEO’s General Manager, Finance, Taiye Eyewuoma, stated that the energy giant will keep its word and continue to support the NFF.
At the award gala tonight, the 1994 Super Eagles squad will be specially honored for being the first team to qualify Nigeria for the FIFA World Cup.
The ‘Golden Generation’ as they are fondly remembered, won the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and made it to the Round of 16 at the USA ’94 World Cup, a feat no Nigerian squad ever since has been able to surmount.
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, while renowned business magnate and football financier, Chief Moshood Kasimawo Olawale Abiola, will be honored posthumously with the NFF Presidential award.
