The African Plant Nutrition Phosphorus Fellowship offers grants of $5,000 each to up to five qualified scientists. This funding supports scientific research aimed at enhancing phosphorus (P) management practices within African agricultural ecosystems, including both field and tree crops. The total grant funding available is $25,000.

Who Can Apply
Eligible candidates for the African Plant Nutrition Phosphorus Fellowship must be:
- Full-time scientists employed at an African NARES (National Agricultural Research and Extension System) institution or university.
- Post-doctoral researchers are welcome to apply.
- Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. degree.
Research Focus
Successful proposals will address knowledge gaps or synthesise existing information to improve phosphorus management practices. Proposals that connect P management with at least one of APNI’s priority areas will receive special consideration:

- 4R Nutrient Stewardship: Aligning P applications with crop growth patterns through adjustments in source, rate, timing, or placement
- Carbon Farming: Examining relationships between biomass turnover and P applications
- Soil Health: Investigating residue management impacts on soil P status, innovative P use in diverse cropping systems, P dynamics in no-till agriculture, or P management in challenging soils (such as high P-fixing soils)
- Precision Farming: Developing innovative approaches to address P variability at the field scale
Application Materials
Applications must include the following in either English or French:
- A detailed proposal explaining how the Fellowship will enhance understanding of P management in agricultural systems.
- Two letters of support on official letterhead (one must be from the applicant’s supervisor).
- A summary including date of birth, academic credentials, and relevant publications related to P behaviour in soil, water, or plants.
- Agreement to submit a final report describing how funds were used to support project outcomes.
