In an interview with Brila FM, the captain of the 1985 FIFA U-16 World Cup-winning Nigerian team said the country’s national team remains a dominant force in African and World football and cannot be written off. However, Ugbade said the Eagles who won the 2013 edition of the tournament in South Africa can win the 2022 edition with adequate preparations.
“I know that Nigeria have won the AFCON competitions on three occasions and I know that automatically they will go there to participate and win. There is this recognition from other African countries that Nigeria is always a force to reckon in a major competition in any major football event. There is nothing we have not won. We have done it before in 1980, we did it again in 1994 and 2013.” Nduka Ugbade

Hostilities will kick off on January 9, 2022, but the Super Eagles’ opener in the tournament is a tough clash against Mohammed Salah’s Egypt on January 11. Nigeria is pitched in the Group D of the continental showpiece alongside Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau. Expectations are always high on the three-time African champions to deliver on the continental and global front. Source: Complete Sports Featured Image Source: Brila
