ZAMBIA 1 – 1 ETHIOPIA
The defending champions, Zambia were forced to a 1-all draw by an impressive Ethiopian side, who were returning to the tournament after a 31-year absence.
The Ethiopians started brightly with their star man, Saladain Said, causing havoc in the Zambian defence. Said’s efforts were rewarded when he was awarded a penalty kick after he was fouled by Zambian defender, Chisamba Lungu but the Ethiopian star, failed to convert the resulting penalty kick with Zambian keeper, Mwene, diving to his left to make a brilliant save.
Said becomes the first player to miss a penalty at AFCON this year while Mwene becomes the first goalie to save from 12-yards out.
Zambia’s last three opponents in Nations Cup finals have all missed penalties in normal time – Ethiopia, Ivory Coast and Ghana.
Minutes later, the Ethiopian keeper produced a kung-fu kick on Lungu after racing 50 yards from his goal line to haul down the Zambian who was played through on goal by Isaac Chansa.
The keeper fell theatrically to the floor and was stretchered off, this charade didin’t stop the referee from giving him his marching orders for the reckless tackle thus becoming the first player to see red at this year’s Cup of Nations.
The champions made their numerical advantage count when former Portsmouth striker, Colin Mbesuma scored just before half time after he was played through by Isaac Chansa.
After the restart, Zambians became complacent and were made to rue their missed chances when Antelopes striker Adane Girma equalised against the run of play.
Gima’s goal was Ethiopia’s first at the Nations Cup since 1976. They failed to score in their last appearance in 1982.

NIGERIA 1 – 1 BURKINA FASO
Super Eagles of Nigeria started their AFCON campaign with a draw against the Burkinabes on Monday night.
Nigeria’s Russian based striker, Emmanuel Emenike broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute after racing onto Brown Ideye’s beautiful flick to jab home the opener.
Nigeria controlled most of the game with Mikel Obi running the show from midfield and should have secured their lead but striker, Ikechukwu Uche missed series of chances after coming on as a substitute for the goal scorer, Emenike.
The tempo of the game changed in the second half when Nigerian defender, Efe Ambrose was sent off for a second bookable offence. Nigeria had to play the reamining 15 minutes, a man short.
The Burkinabes capitalised on their numerical advantage and were rewarded for their efforts when Alain Traore slid home the equaliser on 90minutes after Yobo and co failed to clear Pitroipa’s cutback pass.
The Super Eagles captain, Yobo won his 90th cap on the night and equalled Kanu’s record of 6 AFCON tournaments but he gave a shambolic display in defence.
As it stands, Nigeria have won just one of their last seven opening group games at either the Nations Cup or World Cup while Burkina Faso are yet to win a Nations Cup match on foreign soil, having now gone 18 games without victory since hosting the finals in 1998.
