The Obama Foundation Leaders Program 2026 is currently accepting applications. This international leadership development program aims to provide rising changemakers with the principles, resources, and connections necessary to create enduring, community-focused change. Originally established in Africa in 2018, the program has since expanded to the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, and the United States, uniting a wide range of leaders committed to fostering a more equitable and sustainable future.

The program features intensive learning experiences rooted in President Obama’s approach to leadership. Through full-cohort gatherings, intimate group discussions, and individual coaching sessions, participants examine both the obstacles and possibilities inherent in social transformation. The curriculum supports leaders in reinforcing their values-driven approach, enhancing community connections, and building capabilities to shape systems and amplify regional influence.
Who Can Apply?
Candidates must fulfill all these criteria:
- Located in a qualifying region; for Africa, this encompasses every country on the continent.
- Hold citizenship, permanent residency, refugee status, asylum seeker status, or long-term residency (at least five years) in an eligible nation or territory.
- Currently engaged in work that generates positive transformation for a local area, an eligible nation, or the wider region.
- Possess at least three years of leadership experience within their selected focus area.
- Be between 24 and 45 years old as of July 15, 2026.
- Demonstrate professional-level fluency in English, both spoken and written.
- Not be involved in any electoral political campaign from February 1 through July 15, 2026.

Features of the Programme:
Participants will dedicate approximately 8 to 12 hours monthly to:
- Applied training and resources for values-centered leadership.
- Individual leadership coaching.
- Community group interactions.
- Dialogues with regional and international thought leaders.
- Cultural activities showcasing the region’s diversity.
- Designed environments for reflection, peer exchange, and partnership.
After completing the program, graduates become part of the Obama Foundation’s Leadership Network, connecting them with a global community of changemakers for life.
Timeline
The Leaders Africa cohort begins during the week of September 1, 2026, and concludes by May 1, 2027, with programmed breaks incorporated throughout.

The Obama Foundation is looking for individuals who:
- Work within a defined focus area with quantifiable results.
- Serve in an active leadership capacity, whether paid or volunteer.
- Practice leadership that is principled, fair, and team-oriented.
- Display openness to learning, knowledge-sharing, and development in a multicultural environment.
Given the program’s competitive selection process, only a select number of applicants will be chosen, enabling the Foundation to create a well-rounded cohort representing diverse backgrounds and viewpoints.
