Cosmas Maduka’s life story is a true testament to the power of resilience, faith, and determination. He rose from a childhood of poverty and hardship to become one of Nigeria’s most successful entrepreneurs and the founder of the Coscharis Group.
From Akara Seller to Apprentice
Born on December 24, 1958, in Nnewi, Anambra State, Cosmas Maduka grew up in a very poor household. His father died when he was just 4 years old, leaving his widowed mother to care for him and his siblings. Life was so tough that young Cosmas had to drop out of school by age 7 to help his mother sell Akara (bean cakes) on the streets.
At age 7, Cosmas Maduka was sent to Lagos to work as an apprentice in his uncle’s motorcycle spare parts shop. For 7 years, he worked tirelessly without pay, learning the business from scratch. But his apprenticeship ended abruptly when his uncle accused him of being dishonest and sent him away, with no money, no formal education, and no place to sleep.
Starting Over with ₦200
Cosmas could have given up, but he didn’t. With just ₦200 (barely $1 at the time), he started a small motorcycle spare parts business with a friend. The partnership eventually collapsed, but this failure fueled his determination to succeed.

Today, the Coscharis Group is a household name in Nigeria. It is the sole distributor of globally respected automobile brands like BMW, Ford, Land Rover, Jaguar, and Rolls-Royce. Beyond automobiles, the group has expanded into agriculture, technology, medicals, and manufacturing.
