The Lagos Agric Scholars’ Program (LASP) represents a key element of the state’s Agricultural Youth Empowerment Scheme, aimed at introducing students to contemporary and urban farming techniques that supplement classroom theoretical learning.

Since 2019, the Lagos Agric Scholars’ Program has reached more than 100 senior secondary schools and 3 correctional facilities, focusing on value chains including fish farming, goat and poultry farming, and enhanced vegetable cultivation. LASP serves as a pathway to generate student enthusiasm for nutritious eating habits while promoting agriculture as a credible career option comparable to engineering, medicine, and law.
To connect with students through compelling content, the initiative has introduced a comic book series highlighting various agricultural projects, designed to capture young people’s interest in farming.
The program expanded significantly in 2023 and 2024, evolving from traditional open-field farming and basic fish tank operations to sophisticated aquaponics systems – an advanced integrated farming technology. This enhancement was rolled out across twelve secondary schools and one correctional facility statewide. For 2025, the top 10 schools selected through a vegetable production contest will receive net houses to enable year-round cultivation.
