Airtel is closing in on Glo and may soon become the second largest mobile communications company in Nigeria according to a recent report from Nigeria Communications Commission. It submits 23.6 million subscribers for India-owned Airtel, and 23.8 million for Nigerian owned Glo. The figure makes Glo an immediate competitor with Airtel, a network that has offered several products and services to grow and keep subscribers.
Airtel, according to the report, recorded 2.51% quarterly growth against 1.21% Â that Glo recorded. Etisalat recorded 1.35% in the same period with 15,114,484 active lines.
MTN remained at the top with 51.2 million active lines, of the 117.2m active GSM lines in Nigeria. CDMA and fixed lines/wireless had 2,703,604 and 395,023 active lines respectively. But GSM had 97.36% of telecoms market share in Nigeria leaving CDMA and fixed line/wireless 2.31% and 0.34% respectively.
