The Nigeria Professional Football League returned to action on Sunday, May 9, 2021, after a short break. A slim 2-1 win over Sunshine Stars moved Akwa United to the top of the league table in Uyo.
A 21st-minute strike by Charles Atshimene gifted Akwa the lead, but the visitors equalized eleven minutes later through Sadeeq Yusuf. Seth Mayi would ensure the home side had the day after a 72nd-minute strike sealed the victory.
The big game of the weekend would see Rangers beat Enyimba 2-0 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Sunday. Rangers scored twice from the spot in the 57th minute (Christian Nnaji) and 90th minute (Elijah Ani).
In Gombe, bottom-placed Adamawa United suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Heartland FC of Owerri. A Kingsley Maduforo strike made the difference between both sides.

At the Mt. SAC Relays, Tobi Amusan finished third in the women’s 100mH with a Season’s Best (SB) of 12.61s (2.0m/s). Amusan’s feat is coming after her exploits at the Pure Athletics Elite Sprint Meet where she equalled a Personal Best of 12.48s (2.0m/s), the world’s second-fastest time.
The Nigerian duo Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and Dotun Ogundeji were also impressive at the Mt. SAC Relays. In the men’s Shot Put event, Enekwechi finished third with a mark of 20.97m and was closely followed by Ogundeji who recorded a Season Best of 20.77m.
