Oat porridge is a staple in my home. It meets my breakfast requirement of easy, quick and nutritious. So, I make it at least twice a week. Last week, one of my husband’s friends visited. At breakfast the next morning, I asked him if he’d like to have his buttered toast with Quaker oats, tea or coffee. He opted for tea but he later told me that he found the look and the bland taste of oats off-putting. I laughingly informed him that the taste could be transformed with the right ingredients. He didn’t believe me. Thus, I made him a delicious bowl of oats that altered his perception of this superfood forever.
If you’re reading this piece and you can’t get past the unappetizing look and taste of oatmeal, here are seven ways to jazz it up:
1. Add Nuts or Nut Butter to It:
Your preferred brand of nut butter can be a delicious twist to your oatmeal. Nut butter is basically healthy fat. Your oatmeal needs just a small amount. Simply add a tablespoonful to your bowl of cooked porridge. It will give your food that nutty taste and flavour. You can also add whole nuts to give some crunch to your oats.
2. Add Fruits to It:
Fruits like banana, mango, strawberries can be used in two ways. They can either be chopped up and added to the oats while it’s cooking or they can be used as toppings. Either way, they’d add flavour and natural sweetness to your bowl of oatmeal. Oh, in case you’re wondering, fresh, frozen or dried go well with oats. So, go ahead and make your oat porridge sparkle with naturally sweet fruits.
3. Use Milk to Make it:
If you want a creamier oat, then, don’t cook it with water. Cook it with milk. I use coconut milk or skimmed milk to make my oats. But you can use any milk of your choice to make it.
4. Add a Pinch of Salt: Your oatmeal needs salt to brighten it up. You don’t have to put much, a pinch will do. Salt will bring out the flavour and sweetness of any extra addition; this will help you have a happier bowl of oatmeal.
5. Bump it up with Chocolate:
Your oats porridge needs a decadent element. It needs some chocolatey goodness. Cocoa powder will give your oatmeal a rich flavour that Chocoholics love. If you want the full, chocolatey effect, then, use chocolate chips as toppings. I can assure you that you’d have an unforgettable oatmeal experience.
6. Sweeten it Up:
Fruits can add natural sweetness to oats. But sugar, honey, maple syrup, date syrup can do the same thing too. Just choose whatever works best for you.
7. Spice it Up:
I’ve not tried this one before oh! But food and spices go together; so, it’ll work. Spices like nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon will make your porridge more flavourful. Those who wouldn’t mind a little heat can even add cayenne pepper to theirs.
Finally, you can combine two, three or more of the above-listed options till you have a delicious porridge. Oya, go ahead and experiment with your oats till you improve their taste and flavour profile.
