All is set for the grand finale of the Nigeria spelling bee. The showpiece is scheduled to hold on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at the International Conference Hall of Ritman University Ikot-Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

Sixty one students across the federation are expected to assemble at the oil rich state for the much awaited competition. Spellers are to compete for the prize of best speller in Nigeria for the senior and junior categories. Participants for this event emerged best spellers in their states and also triumphed at the regional level of the competition to make it to the national finals.

Six national champions will emerge from the contest and represent Nigeria at the Africa Spelling Bee later in the year in Uganda with an all-expense paid trip. Last year, Nigerian representatives for the continent’s spelling bee in Kenya emerged victorious at both the senior and junior levels, leaving the West African nation as defending champions with more to fight for this year. Nigeria’s intellectual prowess has never been subject for argument as students from the most populous black nation on earth continue to prove this fact at continental and global level; Nigerians want a repeat of the success achieved in the previous year of this competition.

For this year’s national bee, the winner for the senior category gets a 1 million naira scholarship at any Nigerian university and the champion for the junior level leaves with 100,000 cash prize. In a bid to encourage and motivate participants, second and third place winners for all categories will not be left out of other scholarship awards and prizes to be won. The intellectual contest is expected to be tight, as all competitors know what is at stake. The outstanding academic brains of participants makes the contest more interesting, it is an event not to miss for residents of the Niger Delta state.

The contest’s major aim is to improve and develop the reading habit of Nigerian students. Endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Education, the competition is organized by an NGO called the Bee Spelling Initiative. The organization has set a goal of fostering literacy in all Nigerian students by rewarding learning via scholarships and prizes. Producing the best among Nigerian students and presenting them as Team Nigeria at global level is another responsibility bestowed on the organization by the Nigerian government. It will be no surprise if the group produces wordsmiths and readers that will raise the bar at international competitions and make the country proud.
