Baby items aren’t cheap, as anyone who has ever shopped for them will testify. However, there are a few ways to get everything you need for your baby even if you’re on a limited budget. The keyword here is need; there will always be cute baby things that will have you going “awwwww I just have to have that!” but you don’t, really.

1. Know exactly what you need to buy and stock up on the basics. A list will help with this. When shopping, take your list with you and buy only the items on it. Basics include baby cot, baby mattress, cot sheets, baby dresser, baby towels, baby washcloths, breast pads, baby soap, baby lotion/oil, baby powder, nappy cream, diapers, baby wipes, changing mat, bottles and nipples, sterilizing unit, comb set, sleeper suits, vests, socks, mittens, bibs, baby bath set, car seat, cotton wool, and a baby bag for when you need to go out with your baby.

2. Stick to your budget. Decide on how much you’re going to spend on buying baby things, and then make up your mind to stick to it. You can have your partner or a friend keep you accountable, just in case you come across an expensive crib or stroller that threatens to break your resolve. You don’t need them.

3. Start shopping early. If you wait until the last minute to do your baby shopping, there’s a higher chance of buying things at expensive prices, and of buying things you don’t need. Starting early enough allows you to be deliberate and shrewd in your buying since there’s no hurry and no panic.

4. Shop at cheap places. Fancy, air-conditioned shops can be pricey. You’re usually better off going inside a market known for affordable items. If you can find shops having sales, grab the opportunity. Also, some things are cheaper abroad so you can check online, and have someone help you buy and bring, if possible. Another option is to have things made instead of buying if this will be cheaper. Many parents have spent considerably less getting a good carpenter to make their baby cot and baby dresser, instead of buying.

5. Accept hand-me-downs. Ideally, we would all want our children to wear and use only brand new items, but the reality is that this isn’t always possible. If a well-meaning relative or friend offers items their babies have used, there’s no reason not to accept them as long as they’re still in good condition. You also want to keep the things your baby uses now for your next baby if you plan on having another.

6. Have someone throw you a baby shower. Baby showers provide the perfect occasion for loved ones to give your soon-to-be-born child gifts, which will help you strike some items off your list.

With careful planning, discipline, and help from others, you can be well prepared for your newborn’s arrival without breaking the bank. All the best!
