ConnectNigeria_OUCH   1.The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, October 1, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 54th Independence anniversary celebration.  A statement from the Ministry of Interior, signed by the Permanent Secretary, A.G. Magaji, said the minister, Mr. Patrick Abba Moro, who made the declaration, “congratulated all Nigerians and urged them to build a more united and virile nation that would be the pride of all Nigerians wherever they live.” 2.According to The Nation, Dr. Umoru Omodi, a former Executive Director, National Institute For Oil Palm Research (NIFOR), Benin, Edo State,  said  the  palm oil industry can  create  jobs  in rural areas and contribute to economic development.  He states that many experts and households can be involved in palm oil production and this would have major repercussions for the livelihoods and food security of masses of the population. 3. Nigerian researchers are said to have discovered and validated local plants that treat malaria, similar to World Health Organisation (WHO)-endorsed drugs such as Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACTs), amodiaquine, mefloquine and sulphadoxine/pyrimethamine. 4. The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) recently announced that they are finalising a framework to extend deposit insurance cover to individual subscribers of the Mobile Money Operators (MMOs) in the form of a pass-through deposit insurance. 5. The organisers of Wine/Spirits and Beauty Expo plan to deliver over 100,000 markets to operators on October 10 during the Mega 3 Expo. The expo, which is being organised by Exhibition Gurus will hold at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos. It is designed to be a meeting point for operators in wine, spirit, beauty, fashion and related industries. 6.  Ahead of Nigeria’s 54th Independence Day celebrations on October 1, a group of pastors have begun praying for transformation of the country. In a chat with The Sun in Lagos, the convener of the inter-denominational association, Apostle Bolaji Akinyemi, said his focus was “to create, through intense prayer, a new country that Nigerians have been yearning for. A political group, Advocates for Collective Transformation (ACT), has urged youths in the six states of the South-West geo-political zone to participate in the 2015 general elections for the development of the country. Speaking during the inauguration of its Osun State chapter, the coordinator of the group, Oluwatayo Fashogbon, stressed the need for youths to show interest in politics. 10. According to The Guardian, a report by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) revealed that more than 40 per cent of the world’s people are already online, with the number of internet users rising from 2.3 billion in 2013, to 2.9 billion by the end of this year.
