It is common to find some people in different parts of the world making decisions or vows about certain behaviours, habits or lifestyle they wish to stop before the dawn of the New Year. Usually, these decisions are made in order to turn a new leaf in the year ahead. Most decisions are however not kept to the end of the New Year or even sometimes the intentions are not translated into actions.
Most often, these decisions are a shift from a negative behaviour to a positive one, for instance someone who is a spendthrift may decide to start saving money in the New Year or someone who steals public funds may decide to stop such acts in the year ahead, etc.
To help make a successful New Year resolution we can stick to, here are some tips:
- Seek the right counsel:Turning from an old habit or behaviour is not always an easy task, neither is keeping to a vow. In order to make a resolution which is more likely to hold,it’s a good idea to meet older and wiser people to advise you. It’s better you meet those who you think had similar challenges in the past and were able to overcome them. With their tips and guidance, you should be able make your own decisions about such habits or behaviours.
- Start ahead of time:A lot of people usually wait until it is 31st December before they think of making their New Year resolutions. It is always better you start making your resolution before the New Year starts, even before 31st December, so that you’ll be used to keeping it even before the New Year starts- this will help you to be more serious and committed to the resolutions made, as some people usually struggle to keep theirs barely within the first quarter of the New Year.
- Have a book of resolutions:You may decide to get a bookwhere you can write down every vow you intend to make in the following year; the book can be called ‘my book of resolutions’. You may write your resolutions down in sequence of time and date you intend to start observing them, and you could as well write them down in alphabetical order if you wish. After succeeding in starting and keeping to your vow, you can either cancel what you have written down or erase it, if you had written it down with a pencil, which personally I’ll choose because it signifies that I’ve erased those habits out of my life.
As we seek to become better persons in the coming year, we should make every effort possible to keep to our respective resolutions throughout 2015.
