Looking for a job can be a very strenuous process, especially considering the high rate of unemployment currently in Nigeria. The inability to get a job can also be financially and emotionally depressing for anyone, and most especially graduates who must have spent their university days dreaming of graduation and finding their dream job.

Quite often, an opportunity for employment may come up, but we sabotage it by making some mistakes that put our chances in jeopardy. Fortunately, if you know you are guilty of these mistakes, there are quick fixes to put you back on track.

Filling Applications Wrongly

A lot of times, people don’t pay too much attention to their applications. Granted, application forms are usually long and demand that you do a lot of writing and information giving, but that is not an excuse to badly fill any application. Incoherent information and an uncompleted application form is an indication that you are not really interested in the job you are applying for, and a recruiter will be very quick in dismissing your application if this happens.

What To Do

Always ensure that you fill out any application form to the full, even if you’re tired of applying for jobs or you don’t believe in your chances of being granted an interview. Always have your Curriculum Vitae handy so that you can pick most of the information you need, straight from it. That way, you do not have to type or write from scratch. Proofread your application forms to ensure that all information given is correct, dates match, and no section is left blank unless otherwise stated.

Sending An Application After Deadline

Honestly, this is an inappropriate thing to do. As a job seeker, recruiters expect that you should always be on the look out for job openings and submit applications as at when due. Applications that come in after the deadline are almost always neglected, as it signals a lack of seriousness.

What To Do

Always keep abreast of job openings in fields that you are interested in. Subscribe to emails from job boards and frequently check daily newspapers for job advert. That way, you won’t miss out on an advertisement and fall into the awkward situation of sending in your application after deadline.

Applying For The Wrong Job Position

This is mostly caused by desperation. You want employment so bad you apply for every and any position open. Sometimes, this is also caused by a disregard for guidelines. If any application calls for a Senior Manager position with 10 years of experience, you have no business applying if you are a fresh graduate with no experience. Recruiters put up advertisements with requirements for a reason; to find someone suitable for that position, not to just fill up the space.

What To Do

When scouting job boards and newspapers, ensure that you apply for only those jobs that match your interests and qualifications. That way, you reduce your chances of rejection.

Once you have taken the necessary precautions for your job application, you will discover that your chances of getting interviews become much better.
