In a recent post, we presented
interesting data results from a Facebook study on the most popular expression of e-Laughter – haha, LOL (lol), hehe or laughing emoji.
We also noted that it was inspired by an article called
The Rise of e-Laughter written by American, Sarah Larson and published in The New Yorker. Her funny take and the quirky comments gotten from friends and acquaintances are enough to keep you ROTFLing all day long.
I’m an LOL-er myself and was quite disappointed that my expression received little to no recognition in her post, but I learnt a thing or two and I’m sure you will too.
Let the lessons begin:
1. Ha! is realistic. It gives respectful kudos to a joke that’s been received.
It sounds like a real laugh. Ha! The “ha” is transparent, like “said.” If you’re chatting or texting, a single “ha” means that a joke has occurred, and you’re respectfully tipping your hat to it, but that’s all it deserves.
But then again, it can be a painful jab too. Like the joke wasn’t funny enough to deserve one or two more ha!
s.
2. Hehe! is youthful, much more hip than Hahaha and LOL
Another young “hehe”-er … enjoys that it helps him avoid older terms like “hahaha” and “LOL.” “Have to keep things updated,” he wrote me in a chat.
3. Hahaha! makes people think you’re crazy.
Writing “hahaha” makes you look deranged, but, then again, so does laughing. I’ve accepted this state of affairs, and my friends have, too, for the most part.
