The 2025 African Union Innovating Education in Africa program is currently accepting applications. This initiative focuses on developing, testing, and expanding solutions for ongoing educational and training obstacles across the continent. Throughout its existence, the IEA program has worked with more than 1,500 education professionals, supported 180 innovative projects, and distributed up to $1 million in both technical assistance and funding to integrate exceptional solutions into government education frameworks.

The African Union’s Innovating Education in Africa Program seeks innovators who can present viable educational innovations capable of being sustained, expanded, and replicated broadly. The program aims to engage education innovators across the continent to reimagine approaches that will tackle educational and skills training challenges throughout Africa.
Program Objectives:
The initiative seeks to drive transformation through:
- Motivating innovators to pinpoint significant education and skills training challenges across Africa.
- Gathering creative concepts and solutions for these challenges that can be adopted, replicated, and expanded.
- Fostering collaborative partnerships between educational institutions, training centres, government bodies, and other essential stakeholders.

Who Can Apply?
Eligible applicants must be AU Member State nationals who lead organisations meeting these requirements:
- Currently operating an educational innovation in one or more AU Member States with demonstrable results (educational innovation defined as a product or service using a notably different approach within the African context to address educational system challenges).
Officially registered and authorised to function within an AU Member State.
• Directly overseeing the innovation’s implementation and management rather than serving as a middleman.
Program Advantages
Selected participants will receive one or more benefits, including:
- Cash grants up to $50,000 for three winners to enhance innovation compatibility with public education systems and gather effectiveness data.
- Innovation showcasing to AU Member States and Development Partners, featuring inclusion in the 2025 Africa Education Innovations Handbook.
- Official recognition certificate from the African Union’s Commissioner of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation.

How to Submit
Applications must be completed online in English or French
- Challenge summary being tackled (100 words maximum)
- Innovation overview detailing functionality, implementation strategy, and financial model (under 500 words)
- Performance and impact documentation (under 500 words)
• Proof of business registration and operational licensing
Important Notes: Organisations are limited to one innovation submission per applicant – violations result in disqualification. Previous IEA grant recipients cannot reapply.
