  Ex-Nigerian international Peter Rufai has expressed confidence in the ability of Super Eagles interim coach Austine Eguaveon to lead the team to a fourth African title in Cameroon.

Eguavoen was named as head of the Nigerian technical crew after Gernot Rohr was sacked on December 12. Despite the short time left before the commence of the 2022 AFCON, Rufai who played together with Eguaveon opined that the former Gombe United coach has all it takes to lift the African title as Stephen Keshi did in 2013. In an interview with Completesports, Rufai said:
“I have no doubt that Austine Eguavoen can weather the storm and lead the Super Eagles to glory in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. I have this feeling that he can replicate late Stephen Keshi’s feat despite having a short time to prepare the team.

“He has the players at his disposal and with the support of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) the whole picture may change in Cameroon. The players as far as I am concern are ready and willing to make the nation proud.”
Eguavoen was part of the Golden Generation of the Nigerian national team that won the 1994 AFCON in Tunisia, 1994. He led the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt as a coach and has been backed by his former teammate to bring glory to Nigeria in Cameroon cum 2022.
