No matter how many improvements the world makes, nothing would take the place of agriculture. Agriculture remains one of the goldmines in Nigeria, and when exploited effectively, yields great results. With the advent of technology, different improvements have been introduced to make the process of agricultural activities a lot easier, as so much more returns would be gotten.

The most notable technological advancement that has impacted agriculture is Mechanization. Gone are the days when crude farm implements like hoe, sickles and cutlasses will bring the proposed harvest envisioned by agricultural entrepreneurs. Unfortunately, they are still in use, and will continuously result in a low supply of farm products, poor efficiency and no sustenance of products. With mechanization in farming, there will be the use of advanced technological machines, tools and techniques in growing plants and animals, this will:
  • Reduce the energy spent
  • Save time
  • Improve productivity
  • Improve life span
  • Bring about a regular supply of farm produce
  • enhance economic growth
One of the impediments to mechanization is the land use decree which makes the acquisition of land difficult in a way, making it difficult for peasant farmers to acquire sufficient land mass to practice mechanized farming. But with the evolution of technology, the laws of the land will catch up and ultimately reflect the changes.

The use of tractors, boom sprayers, ploughing machines and pumps are mechanized tools that will help reshape the agricultural sector and help farmers. More notable areas are:
  1. Mobile phones, enabled by GPS: This has been a major improvement in monitoring activities. Agriculture is one sector that deals with multiple chains of distribution and labour. These devices enable supervisors to track the agricultural processes more accurately.
  2. Rice Transplanters: Just like in Japan, rice transplanters have been introduced for efficient rice seedling planting. It takes away the burden of manual labour in the planting process. With the use of remote control, the machine can be monitored without anyone actively driving it.
Other examples include aerial images from satellites or drones, weather forecasts, and soil sensors, which make it possible to manage crop growth in real-time. Automated systems provide early warnings if there are deviations from normal growth or other factors. The advantage of this is that the deployment of emerging technologies in agriculture would drive youth inclusion into the sector. More importantly is that the youths are the ones driving these improvements, so they will be vested heavily in the process. It opens up opportunities and employment avenues for so many others. Fortunately, the government has started deploying technologies to support agricultural production. As they open up more to these ideas, we will use emerging technologies, such as satellite monitoring devices that enable farmers check the progress of their crops without necessarily going to the farm, and other adequate equipment to drive consistent production. Technology, when fully understood and applied, always produces more pros than cons. Featured Image Source: Kiowa County Press
