The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated Lesotho 4-2 in their second Group L 2021 AFCON qualifiers match at the Setsoto Stadium on Sunday, November 17, 2019.

Lille OSC of France striker, Victor Osimhen, was the Eagles star man in Maseru with a brace and two assists as the Nigerian side’s resilience paid off after conceding first in the match. Coach Gernot Rohr made two changes to the starting XI that beat Benin 2-1 in Uyo on Wednesday, November 13, 2019. Leganes of Spain defender, Chidozie Awaziem, and Nantes of France forward, Moses Simon, replaced  Jamilu Collins and Samuel Kalu who scored the decider in Wednesday’s encounter.

A Masoabi Nkoto 11th minute header gifted the hosts the lead. Nkoto capitalized on a defensive error to put the ball past helpless Daniel Akpeyi in goal. Everton FC of England midfielder, Alex Iwobi, benefited from a Victor Osimhen’s pass to equalize for the visitors just before the half-hour mark. Nigeria dominated the game afterwards and would finish the first half with a 2-1 lead after Samuel Chukwueze’s went past Lichaba Thabiso in the 38th minute. Nigeria continued seeking for more goals in the second-half until the 75th minute when a brilliant work down the left flank saw Ola Aina assist Osimhen to get Nigeria’s third goal.

Second-half substitute Ramon Azeez set up Osimhen, who beat Lesotho’s goalkeeper before slotting the ball into an empty net in the 85th minute to make it four. A Chidozie Awaziem own goal in the closing stages of the game reduced the goal deficit to 4-2. Sunday’s victory places the Eagles on top of Group L with six points from two games.

Nigeria’s next AFCON qualifier match will be against Sierra Leone in August 2020.
