The Super Eagles of Nigeria came from behind to beat the Benin Republic national team in their first 2021 AFCON qualifiers match after Stephane Sessegnon had gifted the visitors the lead two minutes into the match.
Sessegnon shocked the hosts after capitalizing on a defensive slip to put the Beninese team ahead in the encounter which was held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Wednesday, November 13, 2019.
The Nigerian team was stunned by the goal and struggled to regain composure until the closing minutes of the second half, which saw Samuel Chukwueze hit the frame of goal in the 40th minute. Victor Osimhen would go ahead to put smiles on Nigerian faces after converting a penalty which resulted from a foul on Olaoluwa Aina on the stroke of half time.

Three-time African champions, Nigeria, started the second half brighter than the Benin team but did not cause much trouble for the visitors’ goalkeeper, Fabien Farnolle, until the 62nd minute when a brilliant solo effort saw Samuel Kalu dribble past the opposition defenders before shooting past Farnolle to hand Nigeria the lead.

The score line remained that way for the rest of the game and has placed the Gernot Rohr led Eagles top of Group L after Sierra Leone and Lesotho played out a 1-1 draw in the other group match. Nigeria will now fly to Maseru to confront Lesotho at the Setsoto Stadium on Sunday, November 17, 2019.
