First Bank Nigeria has emerged champions of the
2018 All Nigeria Financial Institutions Football Competition (ANFIFC), after they edged the Securities and Exchange Commissions (SEC), 4-2 in penalties, at the final showdown in Ibadan.
Both teams were determined to prove themselves not just the better
football team, but, also the better financial institution, as they came face to face at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan. It is fair to say both sides brought their A-game to the field — with the match ending in a stirring 1-1 stalemate.
However, luck was on the side of the First Bank team who managed to win the penalty rounds 4-2 to claim the win.
First Bank was duly awarded the trophy and prize money of ₦2 million, while second placed SEC, got ₦1.5 million.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, applauded all the teams that participated in this year’s edition of the tournament, stating, that the CBN will not relent in its responsibilities to organize events like these to further enhance the inter-relationship of financial institutions in Nigeria.
Emefiele, represented by the Controller of the Ibadan branch of the CBN, Ajunwa Modojemu, further stated that, the apex bank will keep engaging in activities that will promote and develop football in Nigeria.
