Olalere Olakunle, a 17 year old amateur golfer, has won himself a full scholarship to the Elizade University Ilara Mokin, Ondo state.
The youngster participated in the Amateur men’s category of the just concluded 15th edition of Elizabeth Wuraola Ojo Memorial Golf Tournament (EWOMGT), at the Smokin Hill Golf Resort Ilara Mokin, Ondo state — where he put up quite the remarkable performance to take home a well deserved win.
Olakunle had earlier missed out of the elusive ₦5 million sponsorship prize for the hole-in-one, however, he made a gross of 75 and a net of 59 to claim the golfers title and a university scholarship.
The 17 year old who is from a humble home, was hoping to win the prize money to aid the payment of his fees through a Polytechnic since his parents do not have the resources to train him to a tertiary institution. Little did he know that he would win a full scholarship to a university.
The chairman of Toyota (Nigeria), and the founder of the Elizade University, Chief Michael Ade.Ojo, made the announcement, while handing Olakunle the trophy.
“This little boy performed exceedingly well in the tournament that he narrowly missed the sponsorship prize for hole 13. He wanted to go to a polytechnic but, even then, the parents have no money to train him. I don’t know his background, but people like this must be encouraged.
“…I award you a full scholarship to study at Elizade University. This message should be conveyed to the registrar so that he can become one of our distinguished students”
— Chief Ade-Ojo
