“Global Handwashing Day is an annual global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.”
— Global Handwashing
Global Handwashing Day is annually celebrated on
October 15th with the objective of imbibing the habit of
washing hands with soap and water as an effective way of fighting germs and, in the long run, saving lives.
Global Handwashing Day was first held ten years ago, in 2018, when
120 million children around the globe washed their hands with soap in more than
70 countries. Since then, communities and national leaders have worked to demonstrate the value of clean hands and the effects it has on health.
Clean hands – a recipe for health
2018’s Global Handwashing Day theme is
Clean hands – a recipe for health,
focusing on the links between handwashing, food
hygiene and nutrition.
“Handwashing at critical times, especially before cooking, eating, or feeding others is one of the most important ways to keep food clean and safe, prevent diseases, and help children grow strong… This year’s theme reminds us to make handwashing a part of every meal.”
