Nigerian national women Under 20 team, the Super Falconets, have won gold!
On Thursday, August 29, 2019 at the ongoing All African Games in Morocco, the West African women recorded a 3-2 victory against their Cameroonian opponents via penalties in Rabat. Both sides played out a goalless draw in normal time, extending the game to extra time before settling for penalties to decide the winner of the encounter at the Boubker Aamar Stadium.
It would be recalled that the Christopher Danjuma tutored side beat Algeria 3-0 on Monday, August 26, 2019 in the semi-final and their Central African opponents beat hosts, Morocco 3-1 on the same day en route the final. Tournament favourites Nigeria started the game on a bright note, but getting a goal proved difficult. Nigeria’s goalkeeper Chaimaka Nnadozie made a lot of saves in the second-half to prevent the Charles Kamdem’s side from taking the lead.
Failure to convert chances in the extra time for both teams meant the game would be decided through a penalty shootout. After missing two spot kicks out of three, the Falconets bounced back to claim victory, all thanks to Nigeria’s shot-stopper Nnadozie, who saved three consecutive penalties fielded by the Cameroonians. With this victory, the Nigerian women team have won the All African Games for the first time since 2007, making it their third crown in five attempts made at clinching gold.
