Traffic passes through the road leading to the free trade zone in Victoria Island in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos With the unavailability of alternative routes like rail and waterways, most of the population of over 170 million Nigerians are stuck using the road to travel. As a result, it can be extremely chaotic at times. Here are a few tips for car owners and commuters for day-to-day road safety; 1.The car must be locked when the speed is low and while in traffic. When in high speed and on expressways, the car doors should be unlocked so that in case of accidents there is easy access. Some road accident deaths have occurred because of jammed doors. 2.Do not drive on the lane closest to the culverts. 3.Keep all personal belongings in the trunk- visible electronic gadgets is an open invitation to be robbed. 4.Never pick up strangers, they are potential robbers. 5.Always wait on the sidewalk or at a bus stop safely away from traffic and the curb. If you wait at the curb you increase your risk of being in an accident or hit by an oncoming vehicle. 6.Take branded commercial buses and taxis from the car park, and get license and registration tags. 7.Always communicate your location to someone close to you via telephone or social media 8.Never, ever cross in front or behind a bus when in traffic because the bus driver will be unlikely to see you. 9.Do not watch a bag for a passenger, when you notice unclaimed baggage please alert security operatives. 10.Never take an occupied taxi. 11.Be vigilant; if you are unsure of the other passengers’ demeanor, find a way to get down before the bus pulls out. 12.Check for the taxi’s park registration, usually on the right hand corner of the front windshield. People have become victims of robbery and kidnap because of their own negligence, so apply these tips, always be safe, and be alert.
