Nigerian young tennis player, Nene Yakubu, has continued to make the wave as she helped Nigeria clinch gold at the recently concluded qualifiers for the West/Central Africa Tennis Championships (CAT).

Yakubu captained Nigeria’s U-12 team to the competition where she won all her games and equally assisted her teammates, Khadijat Mohammed and Success Ogunjobi, in the doubles that saw the West African nation qualify for the main CAT championship which will hold in Morocco later this year. A 6-0, 6-0, singles win against Gabon and her partnership win with same score line put the Nigerian at the fore during the event.

11-year-old Yakubu repeated same score line against Togo 6-0, 6-0, prior winning the double 6-2, 6-2, and despite the fact that her teammate lost 6-4, 6-4 in her game, the Nigerian representatives had already done enough to win 2-1 as they came out as overall winners. In her match against Benin Republic, Yakubu won her singles 6-1, 6-1, while her doubles ended 6-0, 6-0. A singles 6-2, 6-1, and doubles 6-3, 6-1 wins saw her and team Nigeria triumph over Sierra Leone.

A total of five countries participated in the female category of the competition, while nine countries participated in the male category of the event. The last time Nigeria qualified for the competition was three years ago. While the female team emerged champions and won gold, the male team finished second with silver medal.
