You already know that a goal is a ‘SMART’ objective- specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound. Now here are 10 things you should always keep in mind if your goals must bring you to success: 1. Goals empower you to have your guiding principles. You build your value system based on the goals you have set for your life. 2. Your goals define the range of endeavours you engage in. When you have clear goals you know what to say ‘yes’ to and what to say ‘no’ to, not on the basis of their being good or bad, but based on how they fit in with your goals and ultimately your vision… 3. A goal does not exist in isolation; there must be a big picture. Unless a goal is a means to fulfilling a vision, momentum will be lacking. 4. It’s okay to separate yourself from people who aren’t going your way. Not everybody in life is useful for your journey. When you have clear goals, you are able to decide who to take along with you… 5. There’s nothing wrong with asking for help to achieve your goals. In fact, you cannot do it alone. You need people. 6. Always keep your short term, medium term and long term goals clearly defined. If you have a goal that seems not to be achievable, review it; it may be a long term goal that needs to be split into “smaller” goals with shorter time lines. 7. Always write down your focus items. Where do you need to go? Why do you need to go there? Who will be there to receive you when you get there? Focus items gave you clarity and help you prepare your strategy. 8. When you’ve clarified your focus items, ask yourself “how?” How do you get there? Your strategy must not be fixed; don’t tie your goals to certain activities. If something is not working, change it. Keep your mind on where you’re going and don’t get wrapped up in the vehicles taking you there. 9. Don’t underestimate the importance of getting counsel from people who have attained heights you’re trying to reach. Mentors help you hone your strategy and achieve your goals. 10. Are we there yet? Milestones help you answer that. They not only help you know when you’ve reached where you’re going, they also help you know how far from or how close to your goals you are at various points in time. Set your goals. Go for them. Win! About the author: Joy Ehonwa is a writer, editor and online proofreader who is passionate about relationships and personal development.
