As the elections kick off on 28th March, 2015, the risk of insecurity and conflict is something we must protect ourselves and our loved ones against. There are currently anticipated threats of fanatic violence, and while we pray against chaos of any kind; it is wise that we remain vigilant.
Here are some precautionary measures to put in place. Our compiled list includes tips provided by Nigeria’s Department of State Services:
1. Ensure your home is fully stocked with food items, water and medicine: These are necessities that must be at hand for sustenance during emergency periods.
2. Have enough emergency cash at home: Post-election riots may cause banks and ATMs to be out of service; this is why cash at hand is vital.
3. Your phone must be fully loaded with airtime: Being able to communicate with your loved ones is important during this period.
4. Remain vigilant while in crowded or public areas: Better yet, avoid such places at all cost this election season.
5. Avoid vocalizing your political affiliations in public: It’s also important that you refrain from placing political stickers on your house or cars, and not allow others to do so. This makes you a target to rival party supporters.
While at the voting booth:
6. Look out for unattended bags, luggage, containers and suspicious items in the vicinity.
7. Be wary of people in loose or bulky clothing.
8. All vehicles, bicycles, motorcycles and other means of land transport must be parked far away from polling booths.
9. Avoid arguments or fights with rival party supporters.
10. All forms of trading in the vicinity are prohibited.
We wish Nigeria a peaceful and fruitful election. May the best candidate win.
Long live the Republic of Nigeria!
