The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”.
WHO also estimates that 20% of Nigerians suffer from mental illness; which is being unable to function productively.
Mental illness varies (the list is endless: melancholia, hypochondria, personality and bipolar disorder) likewise the sufferers, but there is a misconception and pre-conceived notion about people with mental illnesses.
Mental illness is associated with more than 90% of the 1 million suicides annually. Causes of mental illness vary. It can be caused by environmental factors, work induced stress, psychology, and sometimes substance abuse.
There are several predisposing factors to mental illness in Nigeria, but because of the problem with misconception, people are afraid to reveal the true state of their mental health out of fear of being ostracized and labelled ‘crazy’.
We live in a crazy world which is why we need a proper mental diet. Ask yourself the following questions as they could help identify potential issues with your mental health.

2.What do you believe in? Does this belief limit you or empower you?
3.What foods are you eating?
4.Are there any areas in the roles you play in your life where you feel incompetent?
5.Which activities do you enjoy the least and why? Is it your job or your house chores?
6.Do you find yourself hating on more successful people? Are you envious or jealous?
7.What would you really like to improve about yourself or your life?
8.What do you believe is holding you back from making a success out of your life?
9.What keeps you up at night?
10.How are your thoughts affecting you financially, physically and emotionally?
For some people, it is important to talk to others when feeling overwhelmed. Who are you talking to? This could be a great factor in resolving any challenges that may affect your mental health. Always talk about your struggles and ensure you don’t go through them alone.
