As you probably already know, apple trees do not grow in Nigeria – it’s not the right climate for them. However, that does not stop many Nigerians from loving the fruit, and it is one of the favourite go-to fruits for people who are trying to lose weight and eat healthy, for good reason too. Here are some interesting facts about apples:
1. Apples won’t make you fat. Apples contain zero fat, unlike bananas which you cannot snack on without caution if you’re watching your weight.
2. Apples are high in fibre – which we know greatly helps the digestive system – and the fibre is high in pectin, which assists the body in keeping cholesterol levels normal.
3. Unlike many other fruits, apples contain no sodium.
4. An apple contains 21 grams of carbohydrates which can help boost your energy levels – the reason we all need our carbs.
5. Apples contain a chemical called boron. Boron helps keep your bones strong and healthy.
6. Apples, like other crunchy fruits (and veggies), help clean your teeth when they are chewed, pretty much the same way a little toothbrush would (though this doesn’t mean you should eat an apple instead of brushing!). Note that doctors warn against brushing your teeth immediately after eating an apple. Why? The acid content of the apple softens your enamel, making it easier for a toothbrush to scrub it away. Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing.
7. China is the world’s leading producer of apples, followed by the USA. Nearly 100 countries produce apples, with countries like Zimbabwe and Kenya at the lower end.
8. Eating an apple 15 minutes before your meal can help you eat far fewer calories than you normally would; this is a great portion-control hack!
9. Speaking of calories, an apple contains fewer than 70, so “fitfam” can really enjoy this delicious fruit without worrying too much.
10. Apples are undeniably delicious. In fact, if you add apple pieces to your vegetable salad you may find you don’t need any salad cream or other dressing. Also, apples taste great on their own, unlike some other fruits with health benefits, like lemon and lime.
You know what they say about an apple a day…
