The Headies award has been around since 2006 and that is a big deal in an industry where award franchises do not last. So here are ten facts and figures you should know about the 14th Headies: 1. The Headies 2020 would be held nearly a year from its originally penned date. This is due to the social movement restrictions that COVID-19 brought about. The award usually holds in December but the inconsistency in the timing of the award season has not helped the reputation of the award in recent years. 2. This year’s award would be held at an unusual location-La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort. This would be a huge departure from award traditions that would dictate it holds in a concert hall such as the Eko Convention Centre. 3. Wizkid is the only artiste that has consistently been nominated since 2012. Starboy may have missed if the awards held last year as he had a relatively quiet 2019.

4. Nancy Isime will be hosting for the first time alongside a returnee from last time, Bovi. 5. Fireboy DML is this year’s most-nominated act with 9 nominations. Fireboy came into public consciousness in 2019 which makes his achievement heavily remarkable. Davido and WurlD follow with seven each and Burna Boy is next with six. 6. Timaya and veteran rapper, Eedris Abdulkareem are on cue to receive special recognition this year. 7. A new category has now been added for this edition- Songwriter of the Year. Good move, I reckon. Songwriting is getting more respect and it is good to see the deliberate efforts of notable acts to normalize song-writing as a job description in the industry paying off. 8. The Headies Hall Of Fame is a relatively new feature and King Sunny Ade will be getting inducted this year. 9. This year’s award will consider music from Nigerians released from July 2020 to September 2020. 10. The Headies will be beamed virtually. Featured Image Source: The Guardian NG
