Amongst 70 member countries present, a Nigerian,
Professor Titus Ibekwe, was elected the Vice-Chairman of the
International Advisory Board (IAB) of the American Academy of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF), at their 2018 annual meeting, held from October 7th to 10th October, in Georgia, Atlanta.
Since the inception of the academy 122 years ago, this is the first time a black African, more-so, a Nigerian, will be chosen to serve in the prestigious board of world class medical practitioners.
Otorhinolaryngology (also called Otolaryngology), is a surgical sub-specialty in medicine that deals with the conditions of the ear, nose, and
throat (ENT) and associated structures of the head and neck.
AAO-HNSF
The AAO-HNSF annual meeting provides an opportunity for thousands of medical professionals and people of interest in the world of medicine to converge for an exhilarating four days, that will feature exhibitions, expert physician series, scientific oral abstracts and panel presentations.
In a telephone interview with
NAN, Prof. Ibekwe, who is also the National Secretary of the
Otorhinolaryngology Society of Nigeria, was happy to have been selected to represent not just Nigeria, but also Africa for the first time in the history of the academy.

The ENT surgeon went on to explain that the IAB not only serves as a communication bridge between members of the AAO-HNSF and international otolaryngology organizations worldwide, but also makes recommendations regarding programs and policies of the academy.
