Nigeria’s Oluyinka Olutoye Appointed Surgeon-In-Chief In US Hospital

American-based Nigerian surgeon, Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, notable for being part of a team of surgeons that carried out a surgical operation on a baby in-utero in a Texas hospital in 2016, has been appointed Surgeon-in-Chief at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in the United States. Olutoye’s took effect from August 1, 2019.

Part of Olutoyes’ new duties include leading 11 surgical departments at the hospital and working towards advancing the common mission of Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The doctor will be appointed professor and the E. Thomas Boles chair of pediatric surgery at The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine, a role which will see him work as the primary surgical liaison between the Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the OSU college of Medicine in the US.

Prior his appointment, Dr. Oluyinka worked as the co-director of the Fetal Center. He is also the immediate past president of the medical staff at Texas Children’s Hospital. His wealth of experience includes serving as a tenured Professor of Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Pediatrics, and chair of the Faculty Senate at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. Doubling as a pediatric and fetal surgeon, the Nigerian’s specialized clinical expertise in fetal and neonatal surgery will be utilized at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Fetal surgeons are notable for close work relations with obstetricians and maternal-fetal medicine specialists in other to provide exceptional medical care for babies in need of surgery in-utero, and also to cater for and improve outcome for congenital anomalies such as spina bifida, and congenital diaphragmatic hernia, among others. 

Nationwide Children’s Hospital is respected nationally for building outstanding integrated research and clinical programs, its seminal work in healthcare quality and patient safety, and as a leader in improving pediatric health outcomes. Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye

Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye bagged his medical degree from the renowned Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He would go on to further his studies in the United States, earning his PhD in anatomy from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. His educational history includes completing his residency in general surgery at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals, Virginia Commonwealth University, and later moving on to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA, to finish his fellowships in pediatric and fetal surgery.

Oluyinka is certified by the American Board of Surgery in Surgery and Pediatric Surgery. The West African is equally a fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Further, Dr. Oluyinka is the past president of the International Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society, a member of the American Surgical Association, and the American Pediatric Surgical Association.
