IOC President Hails Nigeria Olympic Committee Athletes Commission For Contribution Towards The Fight Against Corona Virus

Efforts of the Nigeria Olympic Committee Athletes Commission towards fighting the corona virus pandemic have been hailed by the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach. In a bid to sensitize the public on the corona virus pandemic, the NOC made a video of Nigerian athletes creating awareness about the virus, something Bach hailed Nigeria as being the first country to do and urged other countries to emulate the West African nation. The video which went viral on social media platforms after being posted by Athletes365 and the Olympic Channel is undoubtedly a means of making the global population aware of what to do to curtail the spread of the deadly virus.

Dr. Thomas Bach in an online meeting which comprised 200 athletes’ representatives, executive members of the IOC, inclusive of IOC Athletes Commission and the Olympic Channels, made this disclosure. Nigeria’s representative during the virtual meeting, Olumide Oyedeji (Chairman of NOC Athletes Commission) inquired of the fate of athletes currently on IOC scholarship grants, and for upcoming athletes nursing hopes of obtaining a scholarship, and was fully assured by Bach that they still have their scholarships while doors will be open for others to obtain a scholarship after the pandemic.

Bach went further to appreciate the NOC and Nigerian government for the hospitality he received the last time he visited, describing it as a ‘’memorable one’’ and urged athletes in his closing remarks to remain focused in training and making preparations for the Olympics now scheduled to host in the summer of 2021, stating that the IOC will continue working with various International Federations to see to the completion of the remaining qualification series.
