So I recently started a new job in a beautiful working environment with awesome colleagues. True to the foodie in me, on my first day at work during the lunch break, I headed over to the kitchen to take what I call break-lunch (breakfast+lunch). When I got into the kitchen, I noticed the AC was off and decided to switch it back on but unfortunately it wasn’t working, so I settled with eating my food in the stuffy room. I can’t even remember the actual food I took because by the time I had finished eating I was sweating profusely so I hurriedly left the kitchen. The following day, despite looking forward to eating my food, I dreaded going into the kitchen to eat because of the heat I experienced the day before. Anyway, hunger prevailed and I went ahead reluctantly. Just as I sat down contemplating the fastest way to eat my food with as little suffering as possible, one of the office assistants came in, greeted me and said “Ah, aunty are you not feeling the heat? Let me put on the fan for you”. Honestly, I never noticed the fan at all, since all my attention had been on the AC and since it didn’t work, I never bothered about checking for alternatives. Well that was how I ‘balanced’ and enjoyed my jollof rice.
This story is neither about me nor my delicious meals. But the experience got me thinking about how we often get so consumed and focused on the things we are doing, seeing – or worse, assume we are seeing – thereby neglecting the world around us. Do not get me wrong, I am a firm believer in being focus and committed to whatever it is we find ourselves doing but the truth is sometimes we get so focused on the future that we forget to enjoy or see the present. As you go about performing your daily tasks today, pay attention to your surroundings, appreciate others and sometimes, just slow down to take a deep breath while celebrating every milestone achieved. You would be surprised how much insight these things will proffer in helping you achieve even more greatness in life. Remember, success is not a destination but a journey.
Enjoy your weekend!
