Fish is highly nutritious. Bursting with vitamins and minerals, and a chief source of omega-3 fatty acids, eating at least two servings of fish weekly can help to protect against an array of diseases, from cancer and heart disease, to depression  and arthritis. Not only does it contain fewer calories and unsaturated fatty acids which lower cholesterol, it is an excellent source of protein and is better than most meat sources (which are generally high in “bad” or saturated fat). Two omega-3 fatty acids found in fish are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Our bodies don’t produce omega-3 fatty acids so they must be gotten from the foods we eat. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in every kind of fish, but in especially high quantities in fatty fish. Some good choices are salmon, trout, sardines, herring, canned mackerel, canned light tuna, and oysters. Other healthy ways to prepare fish are steaming, shallow frying, grilling and poaching. All-in-all, fish is healthy food and can be safely eaten in most cases.
