Early Signs of Cancer

cancer
Cancer is a disease which causes uncontrolled cell division and destruction of body tissue. Cancer has several symptoms, which depend on the location, size and effect of the cancer on body organs and tissues. It is important to know some of the early symptoms of cancer. However, also know that having some of these symptoms doesn’t mean you have cancer, and it is paramount that you visit your doctor if the symptoms persist.

Fever:

This is very common with cancer and more often happens when cancer has metastasized (that is, the cancerous cells have spread from the place where they first formed to another part of the body). Cancer, or its treatment, may affect the immune system which makes it harder for the body to fight infections. Fever is sometimes an early sign of blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma.

Fatigue:

Fatigue is extreme tiredness that doesn’t get better with rest. Fatigue may be an important symptom as cancer grows, but is also occurs early in some cancers. Cancers of the colon and stomach may cause blood loss, leading to fatigue.

Weight Loss:

Sudden, unexplained weight loss may be an early sign of cancer.

Loss of Appetite:

Cancer can cause loss of appetite by changing your metabolism (metabolism is the chemical processes in which your body converts food into energy, thus maintaining life). Stomach, pancreatic, colon and ovarian cancers can also put pressure on the stomach, leading to food aversions.

A cough that doesn’t go away:

A cold or flu are potential symptoms of lung cancer, along with red flags like chest pain, weight loss, hoarseness, fatigue and shortness of breath.

Lump in the neck or any part of the body:

A lump may be a sign of an infection or an early sign of cancer. Cancerous lumps don’t usually cause pain, but if you have a lump that doesn’t go away or begins to grow, see your doctor immediately.
