Yemi Alade Becomes UNDP Goodwill Ambassador

  Top Nigerian songstress, Yemi Alade has as of Wednesday become a United Nations Development Programme goodwill ambassador. The announcement was made via the UNDP official website and was followed by an acknowledgement from the music star herself and a welcome address by UNDP Administrator, Achim Steiner.

According to the UNDP website,
“Having participated in the launch of UNDP’s Mission 1.5 climate action initiative earlier this year and promoted UNDP’s COVID-19 response efforts, Alade has already proven to be a valuable and powerful voice for UNDP.”
Yemi Alade will now use her position to further influence matters the most in her capacity as a goodwill ambassador. She has stated how strongly she feels about gender-based issues and poverty amongst women and children, especially in developing nations. According to her
“Women are among the 4 billion people who are trying to survive COVID-19 without any form of social protection,”
said Alade.

“I want to lend my voice to these women and other vulnerable people who make up half of the world that’s struggling to make ends meet. They don’t have the luxury of working from home and are putting their health at risk just to put food on the table.”
She joins a venerated list of celebrities as goodwill ambassadors which includes retired Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba, Iker Casillas (Spanish football legend) and Nickolaj Coster-Waldau of Game of Thrones. The UNDP is the UN agency geared towards SDG attainment especially in the developing countries of the world as well as drive the movement to combat climate change and global warming in the UN member nations.
