With 23.6 million Subscribers, Airtel is Closing in on Glo’s 23.8 million, Report Finds

Airtel is closing in on Glo and may soon become the second largest mobile communications company in Nigeria according to a recent report from Nigeria Communications Commission. It submits 23.6 million subscribers for India-owned Airtel, and 23.8 million for Nigerian owned Glo. The figure makes Glo an immediate competitor with Airtel, a network that has offered several products and services to grow and keep subscribers.
Airtel, according to the report, recorded 2.51% quarterly growth against 1.21% that Glo recorded. Etisalat recorded 1.35% in the same period with 15,114,484 active lines.
MTN remained at the top with 51.2 million active lines, of the 117.2m active GSM lines in Nigeria. CDMA and fixed lines/wireless had 2,703,604 and 395,023 active lines respectively. But GSM had 97.36% of telecoms market share in Nigeria leaving CDMA and fixed line/wireless 2.31% and 0.34% respectively.
