Ever wished you could find out what advice successful professionals have for young aspiring executives? We’ve done the work for you, and put together a short list based on all the answers. Your wish is granted here!
1. Mentorship is non-negotiable. Get a mentor.
2. Doing what you enjoy makes it easier to succeed.
3. Do things right. It may be harder, but it is best.
4. Don’t let fear of failure hold you back. Learn to “fail forward” by gathering lessons from your mistakes. Failure is not an option; if one door closes, try another!
5. Work hard. There is no substitute for hard work. You must put the hours in.
6. If you don’t prepare for opportunities, you won’t be able to seize them when they come your way. Be prepared. Never stop developing yourself. When you keep improving on your skills, you will be equipped to seize the opportunities that present themselves along your career path.
7. Don’t despise small beginnings. Every experience counts.
8. Choose a company whose values you admire.
9. Walk before you run. Be ready to pay your dues.
10. Imbibe a continuous learning culture. Knowledge is power. You can’t give what you don’t have. Keep your knowledge capital high because that is what will differentiate you when it comes time for your employer to choose between you and others.
11. Show initiative; don’t wait to be pushed or told what to do all the time.
12. Let passion drive you; be passionate about what you do and never give it less than 100%
13. Your career growth is your own responsibility, so don’t get too reliant on the organization you work for. Constantly monitor your own progress. Set goals and be honest with yourself.
14. Create time to network. Attend seminars and social events and even programmes organized by your church for professionals. You never know where your next job may come from.
15. Your mind is the greatest asset you have. Keep it open and well exercised.
16. If your work requires a lot of writing, get a good editor. Typos and misspellings take the shine off your work, and they affect the way your clients see you. Establish and protect your personal brand.
17. Have a plan for your life and stick to it. Remain focused and never give up on your dreams.
18. Discover who you are and what you really want, otherwise you may end up living someone else’s dream.
19. Ask God to bless the work of your hands and ensure there is something for him to bless.
20. When you do succeed, never let it go to your head.
Words to take to heart. Enjoy your journey to the top!
