Websites We Like: Nairaland

Nairaland
If you’re looking for a site for discussions on latest events, sports, politics, lifestyle, and much more, Nairaland is the answer. Nairaland was created in March 2005 by Seun Osewa. The website is like an online society; a place where different people exchange views about anything and everything. So, in a nutshell, Nairaland is an online discussion forum. It’s one of Nigerian’s leading websites that talks about everything Nigerian. It’s said to be the only indigenous site that has more views on it other than Yahoo, Facebook, and Google. It ranks over Vanguard, Punch, Guardian etc. As at 2013 on Alexa’s Nigeria category ratings, it ranked number 1. It’s the tenth most visited website in Nigeria and ranks among the 1000 most viewed sites in the world as at October 2015. The site has also been faced with difficult moments, like the time the CEO Seun said he wanted to shut it down which made, well, most Nigerians panic, and also the time it was hacked, on June 22, 2014. The hackers were able to gain access to the website’s host server and backup, which led to all contents to be deleted. But this didn’t stop the site from moving forward as it came back up after 3 days, however, data from the attack was lost and could not be recovered. It still commandeers lots of traffic; stats of daily unique visitors stand at 150,460, daily page views of 827,530 and income per day at $376. Recent statistics has it at 1,872,944 members and 3,771,623 topics. It just keeps growing every day.
