The demand for fish in Nigeria is quite high as it constitutes about 41% of our total animal protein intake by an average Nigerian. Sadly, we need about 2.66 million metric tons of Fish to satisfy the dietary needs of about 150 million Nigerian citizens according to research by Fish consult.Org and we are not anywhere near there in terms of production.
It is good news then, that the United Kingdom is set to partner with Nigeria in the areas of “sophisticated”
fish farming and infrastructural development. This was stated as the aftermath of a meeting between a UK Trade delegation to Nigeria and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama.
The Head of the UK Trade delegation, Mr Emmanuel Finndoro- Obasi, who is also a Director at African House London Limited, explained that the team was in the country to explore areas of collaboration with Nigeria, adding that the mission is to further enhance UK relations with Africa.
He expressed that the delegation is looking at bringing in advanced
fish farming into the country that would enhance the country’s fish production, adding that discussions are ongoing with local partners who would specialize on Tilapia, and this the delegation believes would help the country immensely.
He also noted that in infrastructure, the delegation is working closely with
NAMA to build 5000 homes.
The Foreign Affairs Minister, in his response, assured the delegation of the Federal governments’ commitment, stating that the Federal government is promoting a business-friendly environment to help with foreign investment and local exportation and that the foreign missions would be used to promote business partnerships across the globe.
