Therefore, an effective and productive work environment can only be achieved or attained through effective human resources management. Poor human resources management is one of the core reasons why people quit/resign from their jobs. Human resource management is more than just hiring employees, controlling payrolls, and enforcing company rules. Human Resource Management (HRM or HR) is a department in a business organization that employs a strategic approach to ensure the effective and efficient management of people in an organization to gain a competitive advantage.

Here’s how to ensure a successful human resource management strategy:
  1. Aligning HR with company goals: To achieve success, Human Resource Management should be dutifully enshrined into the organization’s long and short-term goals. It should not be an afterthought. This would help you come up with practical ways to keep your employees happy, engaged, and productive.
  2. Communicate with Respect: Talking down on your employees or barking out orders won’t get you anywhere if anything, it will harm the organization’s growth. The key to building a motivated team is treating them with respect by being transparent in your public communication and discrete in your private communication. Public communication entails praising them, letting them know what’s going on in the organization as this keeps them invested in the organization. On the other hand, you have to be discrete while communicating private matters. This approach helps your team see you as a trustworthy leader.
  3. Knowledge of your Employees: To be an effective HR manager, you need to know your employees. You need to know their personalities, areas of diversities, strengths, weaknesses, abilities, and skill set. This would help you manage them better and exploit their strengths to gain a competitive advantage.
  4. Build Teamwork: Train your teammates and your employees to understand that insecurity and intimidation don’t produce results. Ensuring that they are working together as a team and not against each other. Teach them to build each other up not tear themselves apart. A united team achieves more results.
  5. Focus on Employee Relationship: Employees are motivated to work more and put in more effort when their bosses treat them with respect and have their best interests at heart. You need to build trust, openness, transparency, mutual respect, open communication, etc. Let them know that they matter.
  6. Show Appreciation and Give Reward: High-performing employees should be openly appreciated and rewarded for their efforts. This will serve as a motivation/encouragement to do more and will propel others to put in their very best. In giving rewards, ensure there is a standard to avoid unequal treatment.
  7. Take Responsibility: Always understand that human beings make mistakes but pushing your mistakes to your employees is a great demotivating factor. Nothing demotivates employees than a leader who transfers his mistakes to others just to save face. Apologizing to your team never hurts anyone.
  8. Provide Growth Opportunities: Letting employees reach their potential should be the goal and driving force of a great HR manager. Sponsor and organize training, seminars, workshops so your employees can grow their skills and creativity.
  9. Prioritize your HR Duties: While doing every other thing to ensure a healthy and safe work environment for employees, you also need to keep up with maintaining employees’ records, payroll details, collecting and analyzing data, and other sensitive information.

Hire Correctly: A square peg can never fit into a round hole therefore, the focal point of a good human resource management strategy should always begin with hiring individuals who fit the job description perfectly. Look out for skills, experience but most importantly, look out for passion and zeal. A perfectly skilled individual with no passion for the job will not produce many results.
